Double disappointment for Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic failed to bounce back from his singles elimination as he was dumped out of the men's doubles at Rio 2016 on Monday.

The Serbian world number one was knocked out of the singles competition by Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday, leaving him in tears as he left the court.

The doubles represented a second chance for Djokovic to win an elusive Olympic gold, but he and partner Nenad Zimonjic lost 6-4 6-4 to Brazilian third seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.

Del Potro and partner Maximo Gonzalez lost out to Spain's Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez in their second-round clash, but the Argentinian followed up his singles win over Djokovic with a 6-3 1-6 6-3 second-round victory over Joao Sousa.

Serena Williams claimed a straight-sets victory over Alize Cornet in the women's singles, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - beaten 6-4 6-3 by Gilles Muller - was arguably the highest-profile casualty of the day.

MATCH OF THE DAY
Del Potro initially showed signs of suffering a hangover from his memorable victory over Djokovic, but recovered from an early break of serve to battle to a hard-fought win over Portugal's Sousa.

QUOTES
"I cried a lot last night. Tears of joy, of happiness, for the many people who supported me through my injury and also at this moment.

To be able to give back to them from a court and not from a clinic or a hospital is the best way," - Del Potro, who has been plagued by wrist trouble in recent seasons.

"I haven't done well against her in the past. She says she always knows how to play me.

But every time I play her I'm just not in my best shape, which is ironic. And so I really wanted to play well. Since she always seems to play well against me," - Williams after ending three-match losing run against Cornet.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Defending men's champion Andy Murray is in second-round action against Argentina's Juan Monaco, while Williams and Nadal are also among the big names involved on Tuesday.

Del Potro has a deserved day off after a busy 24 hours.
