Double disappointment for Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic failed to bounce back from his
singles elimination as he was dumped out of the men's doubles at Rio
2016 on Monday.
The Serbian world number one was knocked out of the singles competition by Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday, leaving him in tears as he left the court.
The doubles represented a second chance for Djokovic to win an elusive Olympic gold, but he and partner Nenad Zimonjic lost 6-4 6-4 to Brazilian third seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.
Del Potro and partner Maximo Gonzalez lost out to Spain's Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez in their second-round clash, but the Argentinian followed up his singles win over Djokovic with a 6-3 1-6 6-3 second-round victory over Joao Sousa.
Serena Williams claimed a straight-sets victory over Alize Cornet in the women's singles, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - beaten 6-4 6-3 by Gilles Muller - was arguably the highest-profile casualty of the day.
