AKHA Passes resolution on environmental impact of flood in Afia Nsit 1 community

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Works to resume work on the drainage reservoir project at Afai Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

The Assembly gave the directive in a motion sponsored by Princess Mfon Ekong, member representing Nsit Ibom
State Constituency.

Moving the motion, Princess Ekong said no such underground or sewage reservoir has been constructed to receive such channeled flood.

“It has been observed that this particular disaster befalling the community is occasioned by the non completion of the underground drainage system or sewage
reservoir, despite the fact a large volume of water has been channeled to the area".

"The situation has worsened after each day, particularly during heavy down pour of the week preceding 1st June this year, which has brought grave disaster and untold hardship to the community".

While acknowledging the developmental strides of the present administration the area of construction and rehabilitation of roads across the various local government
areas, she stressed that "the severity of the flood has caused a significant increase in sudden deaths with the community, particularly the as children are being swept on several occasions by the flood "
Other members supported the motion and called on the state government through its relevant agency to make
available measures to mitigate the suffering of the citizens of Afia Nsit 1.
