Marcus Rashford sends message on Romelu Lukaku debut
Manchester United’s first pre-season friendly was supposed to be about £75million signing Romelu Lukaku, however he was upstaged by Marcus
Rashford in the 5-2 win over LA Galaxy.
Jose Mourinho’s side made a strong start to their US tour as they easily overcame their MLS opponents.
With David Beckham looking on 19-year-old Rashford scored twice at
the StubHub Centre, cooly taking his goals after being set up by first
by Jesse Lingard and then Juan Mata.
His brace will serve as a reminder to Mourinho that despite the arrival of Lukaku and pursuit of other targets Rashford could be the man to get
the goals during the upcoming campaign.
Marouane Fellaini was also on target in the first half.
Mourinho completely changed the Manchester United side for the second half of the match at which point debuts were given to Lukaku and his fellow summer arrival Victor Lindelof.
Two more goals were scored but it wasn’t
Manchester United’s record signing on the scoresheet but Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial instead.
Lukaku had one decent chance but was denied by LA Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
Lindelof, signed from Benfica for £31m, was at fault for both LA Galaxy goals. First he allowed allowing Giovani dos Santos to cut inside him before the Mexican scored past Joel Castro
Pereira.
He then failed to challenge Dave Romney
in the air before the defender’s header was eventually put into the back of the net by Dos Santos.
Perhaps the most interesting element of the match was Mourinho trying out a three-man defence system – something he tended to shy away from last season.
He said of it afterwards: ‘The most important thing for me was to compete and the second important thing was to see the players on the pitch in a system which we only played twice last season, so it is far from being our system but we
have been working in the last two days to
improve. Positionally it was good.
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Daley Blind played in the system in the first period and Eric Bailly, new signing Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe in the
second.
Manchester United’s next match is on Monday evening (3am Tuesday in the UK) against Real Salt Lake.
