4-yr jail term for woman who brutalised 12-yr-old minor
An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, has sentenced Funmi Otitoloju who
resides in the Baiyeku community of Ikorodu to a 4-year jail term for
allegedly torturing and brutalising her 12-year-old niece identified as
Adeola for daring to enter the homes of her neighbours without
permission.
Reports say the accused inflicted deep wound cust with a razor
blade on her niece when she was quizzed after receiving reports from a
neighbour and her landlord that she (niece) had stolen from them.
The incident which occurred on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at about 6am, saw blood flowing freely from Adeola’s neck after her aunt inflicted deep cuts on her.
Reports say Adeola was later rushed to a general hospital for
treatment but the hospital demanded a police report and the intervention
of a worker with the Child Protection Network in the Ikorodu area who
was invited over saved the day for Adeola as she tabled the matter at
the Ikorodu Police Division.
Funmi was later arrested by the police while Adeola eventually
received medical treatment with reports suggesting that the Primary 3
pupil has been taken into government custody.
Funmi was later arraigned at the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Ikorodu on two counts bordering on child abuse.
The charges leveled against Funmi in court reads thus; “That you, Funmi Otitoloju, on June 9, at about6.30am
on Sambi Street, Off Macaulay area, off Baiyeku Road, in the Ikorodu
Magisterial District, did assault one Adeola, 12 years old, with a razor
blade on her right hand and neck, causing her bodily harm, and thereby
committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 171 of
the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
“That you, Funmi Otitoloju, on the same date, time and place in the
aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully and indecently deal
with a child, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section
135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”
After pleading guilty to the charges leveled against her, Mrs. A.A.
Oshoniyi, the Magistrate sentenced Funmi to four years’ imprisonment
with no option of fine.
